  • sb129 veto (short form)

Here’s my short form version of Governor Lynch’s veto message regarding the voter disenfranchisement bill, SB129:

    • The right to vote is fundamental -  mess with that right at your own risk.
    • “There is no voter fraud problem in New Hampshire.”
    • It is embarrassing how stupidly convoluted the photo requirement is.
    • It disenfranchises old people.
    • It disenfranchises young people.
    • It disenfranchises people from small towns.
    • It disenfranchises our rural population.
    • It disenfranchises the disabled.
    • Everyone sane is against this bill.
    • There is no evidence this bill is needed.
    • Perversely, this bill makes it easier to register to vote than to cast a vote.
    • This bill is discriminatory.
    • Did I mention yet just how stupidly convoluted the photo requirement is?
    • This bill will disenfranchise innocent people on election day.
    • This bill does not guarantee a voter’s right to ballot secrecy.
    • This bill will screw up our primary.
    • And by so doing, disenfranchise our men and women in uniform.
    • And also by so doing, likely violate federal law on absentee ballots.
    • Therefore, I am vetoing hopelessly flawed, disenfranchising, discriminatory bill.

Nowhere in the Governor’s veto message is any mention of the fact that this bill is a shameless, anti-democratic, partisan plot on behalf of House Speaker Bill O’Brien to give Republicans an edge in the next election.
